Description
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, painted here in a decidedly blue tone, is one of the seven lighthouses of North Carolina, United States of America. At 198 feet tall it is the tallest brick built light house in the world. It warns of the 12 mile long sandbank known as the Diamond Shoals. The other 6 Lighthouses are the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Bodie (also known as Body) Island Lighthouse, Ocracoke Island Lighthouse, Cape Lookout Lighthouse, Bald Head Island Lighthouse (also known as Old Baldy), and the Oak Island Lighthouse.
Lighthouses have many differing characteristics, they are painted differently for visual identification during the day, their horns sound in different sequences for audible identification in poor visibility and their lights flash in different sequences for night time identification.
